THE ADVENTURE STARTS
HERE...
Adventures in Travel Expo To
Debut
In New York City in
2004
New York, NY, May 6, 2003: From
January 9 to 11, 2004, New York City will come alive as
the most exciting adventure travel show in the country,
the Adventures in Travel Expo (ATE), debuts at the Jacob
K. Javits Convention Center, New York's premier event
venue. With both domestic and international adventure
travel booming in recent years, the show is expected to
draw more than 500 exhibitors, thousands of travel
industry participants and upwards of 15,000 consumers
from the New York metro area and around the country to
experience all that is new and exciting in the adventure
travel arena.
Adventures in Travel Expo will
appeal to all travel enthusiasts, and particularly to the
traveler who wants to not only visit a destination, but
to experience it from an activity, cultural, or spiritual
standpoint. Adventure travel encompasses a wide range of
activities - everything from soft adventure such as
walking tours, bird watching, snowboarding, snorkeling,
dog-sledding and camping, to the rigorous hard adventures
like wilderness expeditions, mountain climbing,
whitewater rafting, extreme skiing and arduous treks.
Cultural travel and eco tourism also fit under this broad
"adventure travel" umbrella.
Already, exhibitors such as
Tourism Malaysia, Belize Tourism Board, Rainforest
Alliance, Vermont Department of Tourism & Marketing,
American Hiking Society, New Mexico, MIR Corporation,
China National Tourism Office, Dive Provo, Rus Adventure,
Puerto Rico Tourism, Asia Trans Pacific Journeys, Caicos
Adventures, Crossing Latitudes, Thomson Safaris and many
others have signed on to the Adventures in Travel Expo to
promote their adventure travel services and tours. The
show will also present all of the latest gear and
equipment.
This early line-up reflects the
diversity of the adventure travel community. Adventure
travel has grown approximately 12% over the past decade.
It is big business. Nearly 8,500 tour operators in the
U.S offer adventure trips and over $115 billion is spent
annually in this ever-expanding travel
category.
"There are no world class travel
shows of this kind in America," says Jim Cohen, Executive
Director for Adventures in Travel Expo. "The Expo is
designed for people who want to interact with their
environment in some way, whether by activity or by
attitude. It will be interactive and tailored to directly
suit the needs of its participants. We're working hand in
hand with our exhibitors and sponsors to produce a truly
amazing event."
The Adventures in Travel
Expo is sponsored by some of the biggest names in travel
and media, including The New York Post, 1010 WINS, New
York's most listened to radio station, and National
Geographic Adventure among many others. Additional
support is supplied by trade partners ModernAgent and Jax
Fax. Television coverage is currently in
negotiation.
The first day of the Expo, January
9th, will be a dedicated business to business
environment. A panel of experts is currently working with
the organizers to ensure that the trade conference and
Expo generates huge value and revenue for the industry.
The next two days are open to the general public, and
both the Expo and conference will reflect this. Diving
and scuba pools, rock climbing walls, adventure racing
courses (for both families and racers), zip lines, luxury
spa massages, National Geographic Adventure editors and
photographers conducting seminars and photo workshops,
outdoor techniques, inspiring seminars, music from around
the world and a film festival will round out an exciting
roster of events.
The organizers are also creating
an author's table, which currently features Dave Noland
of Travels Along the Edge fame, and Forbes writer James
M. Clash, author of To The Limits: Pushing Yourself to
the Edge - in Adventure and in Business.
