Mozambique is emerging as one of Africa's most exciting, new tourist destinations. Thousands of miles of its idyllic coastline embrace the Indian Ocean. The extensive coral reefs hold a dazzling display of tropical fish and marine life, making Mozambique an ideal destination for diving and snorkeling. It may come as a surprise, but Mozambique has been described by many as a fascinating destination, well worth a visit. Now is a great time to get a 'sneak preview' of this cosmopolitan and lovely venue. Despite a 20-year internal war (which ended in 1992), Mozambique is still a beautiful and exciting destination. Mozambicans are putting the past behind them and are rebuilding their country at a remarkable pace. In 2002, about 400,000 tourists visited Mozambique and an annual growth rate of 10% is anticipated. Old-timers say hat Maputo is rapidly regaining some of its old charm. Photo above: M tarlene Melton

This unique tour will take you to Maputo, the cosmopolitan capital city of Mozambique. Formerly named Lourenco Marques, Maputo has wide avenues lined with red acacia and lilac jacaranda flowering trees. It offers innumerable historical, cultural and scenic spots. We are bound to enjoy the full day tour of Maputo, which will include visits to the Praca da Independencia to see the Catholic Cathedral, an imposing white building with a beautiful tower and the Council Chambers, a beautiful neoclassical building. We will also visit the Railway Station designed by A. G. Eiffel (as in the Eiffel Tower) in 1910 and The Fortress, one of the oldest buildings in Maputo and now the Military Museum. We will visit several other museums that will give us a touch of the vibrant cultural heritage that is so uniquely Mozambican.

In Maputo, our accommodations will be at the Hotel Polana, set amidst swaying palms and landscaped gardens right in the heart of the city. There will be plenty of time to shop and bargain for souvenirs at the various marketplaces around town, and to possibly take in some of Maputo's nightlife. We will also visit the lovely, white-sand beach resort on Inhaca Island. Inhaca Island is a small, inhabited island, just off the coast of Mozambique, about 25 miles from Mapauto. It has a wealth of breathtaking beaches, coral reefs and exotic marine life. If images of lazy afternoon siestas and azure blue seas fill your thoughts, chances are you may be dreaming of Inhaca Island. We will have lunch at the Inhaca Island Resort, a 4-star facility situated among coconut palms in a tropical setting. We return to Maputo at about 5:00 P. M. One day will be set aside for you to explore Mozambique on your own. All along the way, we will have opportunities to interact with the people of Mozambique, known for their warmth, explore the culture or just relax at the beach or by the pool. I can assure you that you will have wonderful memories of Mozambique.

The following are included in this tour: Round trip air fare between Johannesburg and Maputo, 4 nights accommodations at Polana Hotel on double occupancy basis, breakfast daily, full day city tour of Maputo, excursion by boat to Inhaca Island and lunch, airport/hotel transfers. NOTE: Participants in this tour will depart from Johannesburg on Saturday, May 17 on a South African Airways flight at 9:30 A. M.

Since the ATA Congress does not end until 12:00 noon, it is advisable to arrive in Johannesburg on May 16 for an overnight in order to make the 9:30 A. M. flight for Maputo on May 17. You will arrive back in Johannesburg on Wednesday, May 21 at 5:20 P. M. Please bear this in mind when making flight arrangements for your return to New York. All visitors to Mozambique require an entry visa. *Above costs subject to final confirmation.
