South African Airways Update

South African Airways with Swissair as a partner, is now part of the strongest airline alliance on the African continent with a share of over 40 percent of the traffic between Africa and Europe. Since September 1998, SAA has achieved the near impossible by gaining alliances with airlines that will ensure that SAA maximizes the value of the airline and all partnerships.

SAA's 'Networking Africa' program, with track records such as alliances with airlines like Ghana Airways and Emirates has proved to be extremely successful. The airline understands the need for more frequent flights into Africa. SAA through its alliance partners, now flies to 21 destinations in Africa, 192 times per week.

SAA's agreement with Nigeria Airways will see Lagos and New York being connected for the first time in seven years. SAA's aim is to offer an increased service between West and East Africa, something that would have been impossible during the past isolation.

The partnership between SAA, South African Express Airways and South African Airlink shows an unparalleled force in South Africa. Together, these three airlines operate the largest and most modern aircraft and extensive feeder network in Africa. SAA shares a common designator code for all flights with these two partners as well as a common corporate identity and check-in facilities. Together, the three airlines hold the position as the leading aviation network in Africa.

The significant alliance between SAA and Ghana Airways not only offers a superior network of near-daily services that effectively link West and East Africa, but also offers a more comprehensive choice of faster services between West, East and Southern Africa.

SAA, now, too has access to the shopping and business nerve center of Dubai and the Middle East. This partnership offers SAA passengers daily return flights between Johannesburg and Dubai, with four services weekly operating direct and three via the Comores.

SAA announces delay on Lagos New York route

South African Airways and Nigeria Airways have delayed the intended launch of flights between Lagos and New York due to start up on 30 October 2000. This is as a result of outstanding agreements between the two carriers, which are a prerequisite to receive the final regulatory approvals to allow the commencement of the operation.

South African Airways has a Boeing 747-300 on the ground allocated to perform this service and in addition, both teams have completed the integration of the cabin crew, ground and passenger handling, airport security training and the onboard product designs reflecting the joint logos of each airline. More African Regional Flights

SAA flies to 21 African destinations - among them Harare, Victoria Falls, Bulawayo, Maputo, Dar es Salaam, Entebbe, Nairobi, Lusaka, Luanda, Mauritius, Windhoek, Lagos, Abidjan, Accra, Blantyre, Lilongwe, Gabarone, Maseru, Manzini, Walvis Bay and Eros -192 times a week.

It's official: South African Airlines is the airline for Africa flying more often and to more regional destinations on the continent than any of its competitors. And, just days after announcing that SAA would be increasing flight frequencies to some destinations in Africa by up to 50 percent, Chief Executive Officer, Coleman Andrews, said the airline was planning to schedule even more flights to Zimbabwe before year end.

"Our decision to push for an even greater increase in our flights to Zimbabwean destinations comes at a time when most other international and inter-continental airlines are reducing the numbers of flights there - severely inconveniencing passengers. "By upping the numbers of times we fly to these destinations we're giving a boost to our own tourism industry by encouraging tourists to use South Africa as their jump-off point to visit one of Africa's premier destinations," commented Mr Andrews.

In addition to the normal regional schedule, SAA's new schedules from Johannesburg will increase its services to:
Destination Frequency per Week Effective Date:

Harare, Zimbabwe 11 1 November 2000
Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe 11 1 November 2000
Lusaka, Zambia 7 16 October 2000
Nairobi, Kenya 7 30 October & 1 December 2000
Lilongwe, Malawi 3 1 December 2000
Entebbe, Uganda 3 1 December 2000

Subject to regulatory approval, flights to the following destinations will be increased to:
Victoria Falls 14, Harare 13, Maputo 10, Lusaka 9, Ndola 7, Bulawayo 7

Andrews said increased business traffic within Africa had led to the decision by the airline to revamp its schedules. "We've heeded the call by our passengers and alliance partners in Africa to dramatically expand and streamline our flight schedules so that their trips can be conveniently planned," he said
