7th Cultural Ecotourism Symposium in Zanzibar
What we call "Sustainable," "Responsible", or "Eco-"Tourism, has become a key facet of the world's travel tourism industry. Among the first to recognize its enormous potential was the Africa Travel Association, which launched a series of Ecotourism Symposia, making its debut in Dakar, Senegal (1992). Interest and awareness grew at each succeeding event, until our Environment and Natural Resources Group, chaired by David Gibson, produced the 10-point Fés Declaration for Responsible Travel. Zanzibar Commission of Tourism was represented by Executive Secretary, Mr. Vuai Mohammed. The symposium venue will be the lovely Zanzibar Beach Resort and Conference Center, facing the sea. The four star property is conveniently located close to the airport, seaport, city center (Stone Town) and its museums, galleries and handicraft shops. Zanzibar, located on the Indian Ocean off the coast of mainland Tanzania, is a separate state within the United Republic of Tanzania. Popularly known as the "spice islands," Zanzibar consists of Unguja (known as Zanzibar Island), Pemba and some 50 smaller surrounding islands and islets. The International Board of Directors and Staff of the Africa Travel Association wish to express our sincere appreciation to our Sponsors Ministry of Trade, Industry, Marketing and Tourism, Zanzibar, Tanzania Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, United Republic of Tanzania Ministry of Tourism & Information, Republic of Kenya Ministry of Tourism, Environment, and Natural Resources, Republic of Zambia Bermuda Department of Tourism Chemonix Inc. THE ARUSHA MANIFESTO The first President of Tanzania, Mwalimu Julius K. Nyerere recognized the importance of Africa's wildlife, not only to the future of all Africans, but also to the rest of the world. In September 1961 at a symposium on the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources, he gave a speech that has become known as the Arusha Manifesto: "The survival of our wildlife is a matter of grave concern to all of us in Africa. These wild creatures amid the wild places they inhabit are not only important as a source of wonder and inspiration but are an integral part of our natural resources and our future livelihood and well being. "In accepting the trusteeship of our wildlife we solemnly declare that we will do everything in our power to make sure that our children's grandchildren will be able to enjoy this rich and precious inheritance. "The conservation of wildlife and wild places calls for specialist knowledge, trained manpower, and money, and we look to other nations to cooperate with us in this important task, the success or failure of which not only affects the continent of Africa but the rest of the world as well." The College of African Wildlife
Management The College Curriculum: Since its establishment, the College has developed a range of different courses, each targeted for a particular level, and each geared towards producing professional, knowledgeable and skilled wildlife managers. The College aims to provide needs-based, responsive and adaptive training to meet the ever-changing demands of clients. Curriculum review is undertaken on a continual basis to incorporate emerging issues and practices in wildlife management. A regional external curriculum review panel advises the College on the content of the curriculum, and monitors training quality. Zanzibar's Extraordinary Sites of the Port's Slave Trade along the African Diaspora Heritage Trail Owing to the growth of slave trade in 18th and early 19th century, Zanzibar became an essential location along the Eastern African slave-trading routes. Slaves were taken from as far as Congo, traveled to Bagamoyo, then shipped to Unguja to either work in the cloves and coconut plantation in Unguja and Pemba or to be shipped to the Middle East and former French colonies of Reunion, Mauritius, Seychelles and Madagascar, or North America.
