ATA 7th Cultural Ecotourism Symposium in Zanzibar
an Outstanding Success (see photos).

Mira Berman, ATA Executive Director stated "H.E. Amani Abeid Karume's personal presence at the opening of this historic symposium is an indication of the high level of importance that the Zanzibar Government places on the development of sustainable and cultural tourism." Berman also noted that this is the first time that ATA has held an event in Zanzibar, and commended the strong support of the Minister of Trade, Industry, Marketing and Tourism, Hon. Mohammed Aboud Mohammed.

Action Plan: ATA Environment and Natural Resources Group

What we call "Sustainable," "Responsible", or "Eco-"Tourism, has become a key facet of the world's travel tourism industry. Among the first to recognize its enormous potential was the Africa Travel Association, which launched a series of Ecotourism Symposia, making its debut in Dakar, Senegal (1992). Interest and awareness grew at each succeeding event, until our Environment and Natural Resources Group, chaired by David Gibson, produced the 10-point Fés Declaration for Responsible Travel. The Hon. Mohammed Aboud Mohammed, Zanzibar's Minister of Trade, Industry, Marketing and Tourism extended his government's full support to ensure the success of the ATA event. "The timing of Africa Travel Association's 7th Cultural and Ecotourism Symposium for Zanzibar is excellent," said Hon. Mohammed. "We have just completed a Tourism Master Plan and are in the process of establishing a new brand for Zanzibar. World renowned as an exotic beach and water sports destination, Zanzibar's new focus will be on the archipelago's rich cultural history and festivals; as well as sustainable tourism and environmental development especially in Pemba. Zanzibar will launch its first public/private sector tourism campaign in partnership with the newly formed private sector organization, the Zanzibar Association of Tourism Investors (ZATI). Until now we have not yet tapped into the enormous potential market for cultural and sustainable tourism programs in North America. We look forward to hosting ATA and opening that door a little wider for American and Canadian tourists to Zanzibar."

Zanzibar Commission of Tourism was represented by Executive Secretary, Mr. Vuai Mohammed. The symposium venue will be the lovely Zanzibar Beach Resort and Conference Center, facing the sea. The four star property is conveniently located close to the airport, seaport, city center (Stone Town) and its museums, galleries and handicraft shops. Zanzibar, located on the Indian Ocean off the coast of mainland Tanzania, is a separate state within the United Republic of Tanzania. Popularly known as the "spice islands," Zanzibar consists of Unguja (known as Zanzibar Island), Pemba and some 50 smaller surrounding islands and islets.

The International Board of Directors and Staff of the Africa Travel Association wish to express our sincere appreciation to our Sponsors

THE ARUSHA MANIFESTO

The first President of Tanzania, Mwalimu Julius K. Nyerere recognized the importance of Africa's wildlife, not only to the future of all Africans, but also to the rest of the world. In September 1961 at a symposium on the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources, he gave a speech that has become known as the Arusha Manifesto:

"The survival of our wildlife is a matter of grave concern to all of us in Africa. These wild creatures amid the wild places they inhabit are not only important as a source of wonder and inspiration but are an integral part of our natural resources and our future livelihood and well being. "In accepting the trusteeship of our wildlife we solemnly declare that we will do everything in our power to make sure that our children's grandchildren will be able to enjoy this rich and precious inheritance. "The conservation of wildlife and wild places calls for specialist knowledge, trained manpower, and money, and we look to other nations to cooperate with us in this important task, the success or failure of which not only affects the continent of Africa but the rest of the world as well."

The College of African Wildlife Management
Following the Arusha Manifesto in 1961, the College of African Wildlife Management was established in 1963 as a pioneer institution for the training of African wildlife managers. Since this time, the College has been a leader in providing quality wildlife management training in Africa, and has trained over 2000 wildlife managers from 23 African countries and 17 non-African countries.

The College Curriculum: Since its establishment, the College has developed a range of different courses, each targeted for a particular level, and each geared towards producing professional, knowledgeable and skilled wildlife managers. The College aims to provide needs-based, responsive and adaptive training to meet the ever-changing demands of clients.

Curriculum review is undertaken on a continual basis to incorporate emerging issues and practices in wildlife management. A regional external curriculum review panel advises the College on the content of the curriculum, and monitors training quality.

Zanzibar's Extraordinary Sites of the Port's Slave Trade along the African Diaspora Heritage Trail

Owing to the growth of slave trade in 18th and early 19th century, Zanzibar became an essential location along the Eastern African slave-trading routes. Slaves were taken from as far as Congo, traveled to Bagamoyo, then shipped to Unguja to either work in the cloves and coconut plantation in Unguja and Pemba or to be shipped to the Middle East and former French colonies of Reunion, Mauritius, Seychelles and Madagascar, or North America. Tanzania's Major Site along the African Diaspora Heritage Trail

Bagamoyo, Proposed Unesco World Heritage Site and Part of Tanzania's African Diaspora Heritage Trail. Bagamoyo, 45 miles north of Dar es Salaam, is an important cultural heritage site for Tanzania. One of the most revered historic centers of the infamous slave trade,Bagamoyo was also the first capital of Tanzania under German Colonial rule until it shifted in 1892 to Dar es Salaam.

The following is a recap of the event activities which occured from December 2 to 7, 2003 followed by post tours of Zanzibar and the Islands.

The Host Committee and ZATI share a key role: A host committee has been formed under the direction of the Executive Secretary of the Zanzibar Tourism Commission, Mr. Vuai M. Mohammed, together with the members of the newly formed Zanzibar Association of Tourism Investors (ZATI). The Symposium theme, "the Role of Responsible Tourism in Economic Growth," will be addressed by both the public and private tourism sectors. Case studies and ecotourism marketing initiatives will be presented and discussed as the "driving forces for responsible tourism."

Conference Venue: The lovely Zanzibar Beach Resort and Conference Center, facing the sea, will be the symposium venue. The four-star property is conveniently located close to the airport, seaport, city center (Stone Town) and its museums, galleries and handicraft shops. Delegates will have an opportunity learn about Zanzibar's rich history and tradition of religious tolerance. Host day will include a tour of Stone Town, famous for its Swahili culture and architecture, and include visits to such historic sights as the Old Fort, the Palace Museum (Beit-al-Sahel) and the House of Wonders (Beit-al-Ajaib), as well as a typical Zanzibari cultural festival.

About the Destination : Zanzibar, located on the Indian Ocean off the coast of mainland Tanzania, is a separate state within the United Republic of Tanzania. Popularly known as the "spice islands," Zanzibar consists of Unguja (known as Zanzibar Island), Pemba and some 50 smaller surrounding islands and islets.

ATA delegates will be able to take advantage of pre and post safaris within Zanzibar and on mainland Tanzania (see web site for details). Special fares will be offered by South African Airways and Ethiopian Airlines.
