At a recent awards ceremony, it was announced that Conservation Corporation Africa (CC Africa)'s Phinda Private Game Reserve was the overall winner of the Best Practice Award.

Phinda, which forms the link between private reserves and the Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park; a World Heritage Site in KwaZulu-Natal, was also the winner of the Best Contribution to the Natural Environment category, and a finalist in both the Best Community Involvement category, and the Best Practice &endash; Accommodation Establishment.

The Imvelo (Zulu for "nature") Awards were launched this year by FEDHASA, in association with Greening the WSSD initiative. Willem Fick, Executive Director of FEDHASA says "The Awards have enabled hospitality businesses to illustrate their commitment to their environment and responsible tourism . . . and pay tribute to members of the hospitality industry who have implemented sustainable economic, social and environmental programs at their establishments."

Mr Valli Moosa, Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism says "Responsible tourism destinations conserve nature and increase the living standards of local communities. By supporting these destinations, and contributing to their successes, tourists can help them achieve these aims."

Steve Fitzgerald, CEO of CC Africa, donated the R10 000 prize money to the Africa Foundation &endash; founded by CC Africa to promote empowerment of rural communities surrounding CC Africa Reserves &endash; now a not-for-profit organization committed to community projects. Fitzgerald also dedicated the awards to the management and staff of Phinda, who have worked tirelessly and with complete commitment to make Phinda the wildlife, environmental and social success it is today.

Awards and Speakers Bureau to promote African Trade and Tourism in North America

In any language, Africa offers an exciting range of business, investment and tourism opportunities. That's the positive message Africa Travel Magazine's new Service and Speakers Bureau wants to communicate in cities across the USA, Canada, and the Caribbean. A similar long-range program will reach the travel trade and business community in Africa.

The initial effort is being generated through our media combination, Africa Travel Magazine and Web Site - which averages 10,000 hits daily. However, nothing beats personal contact, and great opportunities await us year round at ATA events and others. That's why we're creating a Road Tour Schedule for 2003 and beyond. We invite speakers to join Editor Jerry W. Bird, who launched the program in June 2002 at a National Convention in Canada. His public speaking and media interview agenda continues en route to Atlantic City (Sept. 30) and ATA's Ecotourism Symposium in Fez, Morocco starting Dec. 8, 2002. If you are interested in getting involved in our Speakers Bureau, Awards Program, Circulation of African Literature, or Media Events, fax (604) 681-6595 or e-mail: africa@dowco.com

U.S. Africa Achievement Awards -2001

"Africa-Man-Of-The-Year Award"
will go to Former President Bill Clinton.

Clinton

Beverly Hills, California - Former U.S. President Bill Clinton is being honored with the "Africa Man-Of-The-Year Award" by the U.S. based Africa Achievement Awards. In announcing the selection of President Clinton, the Africa Awards Committee referred to his efforts during his presidency in developing understanding of Africa's economic and cultural importance to America.

The presentation will be made as part of the 11th Celebrate Africa Festival, during the Africa Awards Dinner, at the Beverly Hills Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, Friday evening, August 03, 2001.

The Nigerian-born, Charles Chinyere Anyiam, founder and publisher of The African Times, the influential U.S. published and edited biweekly newspaper, and Chairman of the Africa Awards Committee stated: "During President Clinton's tenure in the White House, Africa came into focus as a strategically important and culturally important part of the world for America, and our Committee received overwhelming amount of requests and nominations for President Clinton to receive this year's honor. He certainly deserves it and the millions of Africans living in the United States wish to thank him."

The Africa Awards are also honoring  Mr. Abdoulaye Wade, the President of Republic of Senegal, selected for the "Africa Political Leadership Award" in recognition of his 26 years of unwavering efforts to bring diversity and peace to Senegal; and Dr. Mathias Fobi, a distinguished Cameroonian-born surgeon, now residing in the United States. Dr. Fobi will receive the "Africa-Émigré Community Leadership Award" for his numerous civic contributions to the African Diaspora and his position as a positive role model of the African immigrant community in the Americas. The fourth honoree is Dick Griffey, who, over the past twenty years, has distinguished himself in developing business links between the nations of Africa and the United States. He will be honored with the "Africa Business Award."

The Africa Achievement Awards were established in 1996 as part of the yearly Beverly Hills Celebrate Africa Festival to honor deserving individuals and organizations who have contributed to Africa's resurgence on the world economic and political stage.

Past honorees have included: President Nelson Mandela (1997), Archbishop Desmond Tutu (1997), Steve Wonder (1996), late boxing champion Archie Moore (1996), Congresswoman Maxim Waters (1997), Lebo M. for his role in the Walt Disney epic "Lion King" (1998), Congressman Mervyn Dymally (1996), General Abdulsalami Abubakar, former Nigerian Head of State (1998), National Geographic Society Television (1996), Western Union Financial Services International (1998).  Last year, the Awards went to President Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria and his wife, in addition to the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas.

The U.S. based Africa Awards attract many VIPs and notables in politics, business and entertainment; from Washington DC, New York, Atlanta and Southern California, as well as many guests from Africa. The event, which is white-glove formal, is extremely well attended and brings in the elite of Southern California's more that half a million Africa-Émigré population, as well as much of Hollywood's entertainment and media community.
