Home to more than eighty living languages and a rich tangible and intangible heritage, Ethiopia is a land of tremendous cultural diversity. In recognition of the abundance of traditional living crafts in Ethiopia as a valuable source of cultural expression and creativity, this year's celebration of the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development will focus on the links between craft and development.

Craft production can also play a significant role in improving socio-economic conditions in urban and rural communities of Ethiopia, which is classified by the UN system as an LDC (least developed country).

The celebration of World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development- will feature addresses by five representatives from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Ethiopia Cultural Heritage Project (financed by the World Bank), an NGO and the University of Addis Ababa. The speakers will discuss their experiences in the field of crafts and their impact on the livelihoods of the people concerned. Their talks will be illustrated by a craft and photo exhibition. The event is organized by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Ethiopia and the UNESCO Addis Ababa Office.
