The
Rising popularity of cruising in
Africa
. By Jerry W. Bird, Editor. Imagine a
cruise around Africa, via the Suez Canal,
stopping at exotic ports on the
Mediterranean, Atlantic and Indian Ocean.
Or if that's not enough, Africa's rivers
and lakes offer an abundance of
opportunity for everything from soft
adventure to luxury. From what we've
heard, travel agents can expect new cruise
programs involving Africa. Stay tuned for
an update in our Africa Yearbook

The
Millennium Cometh:
By Yves Stranger. From Impressions Magazine
(British Airways). According to the Julian
calendar, Ethiopia hits the year 2000 this
September - the perfect time to reflect on the
country's history. The dreadlocked musicians
greeting each other in a thatched wattle and-daub
hut in Shashemene, southern Ethiopia, have no
doubts about the color of the future, and the
green, yellow and red Ethiopian flag flapping gaily
in the wind above the hut echoes the colors of the
clothes they wear. The millennium is coming to
Africa, and his majesty is riding high, like a
lion, in Zion: "Jah Rastafari! Hail to his majesty
Haile Selassie. Hail to Ethiopia and 2,000 years of
history!

Berber
Wedding Fair at Imilchil
By
Muguette Goufrani. My father, who operated a tour
company in Casablanca, Morocco and France for many
years, took me along with a German tour group to
visit a traditional "Wedding Fair" at Hadiddou
Imilchil, a Berber village in southern Morocco.
While I knew that many Berber Fairs combine a local
Saint's Day with a regional market event, only at
September's 'moussem' (pilgrimage) of Imilchil,
have I seen such a colorful pageant, with instant
engagement, and a mass exchange of marriage
vows.

Great
Botanical Gardens of Limbe, Cameroon
By
Jerry W. Bird. During the ATA Eco Cultural Tour of
Cameroon in West Central Africa, we were captivated
by the Limbe Botanical Gardens, whose trees and
shrubs contain many of the health giving and
curative products known to mankind. Here is what
Cameroon's Ministry of Tourism has to say:.
"Created in 1892 by German horticulturists to
acclimatize economic and medicinal plants such as
quinine, coffee, rubber, cocoa and banana, the
botanic garden in Limbe also serves as a training
center for Cameroonians in the field of
agriculture, horticulture and forestry.

Djerba,
Tunisia's Island of
Forgetfulness
By
Habeeb Salloum.
No
different from Ulysses, who some authors
have described as Djerba's first tourist,
a traveler will find the people of this
Tunisian isle friendly and hospitable.
From the first day of a visit, the
delightful charms of Djerba (also spelled
Jerba) will hold most travelers
spellbound. Why this island, which
travelers have labeled, 'Isle of
Forgetfulness', holds visitors under its
spell, is virtually unexplainable. A great
many attribute it to its magic halo - a
combination of a clear-blue sky, shining
white houses, clean and well-kept towns,
tree-covered countryside and warm, yet not
too hot climate. Whatever the case, a good
number of travelers go into raptures when
describing this island - made famous by
Ulysses. Photo: Villas amongst the

countries shatters the myths and blows

Pioneer
Aviators Inspired Today's Long Haul
Flights .
By
Jerry W. Bird. Travel from Vancouver to
Africa via Asia Pacific recalls the vision
of Edmonton's Grant
MacConachie,
former bush pilot and founder of Canadian
Pacific Airlines. Grant dreamed of an air
bridge to the Orient and across the pole.
The Aviator,
Howard Hughes was another famous
visionary. See our item about his famous

I am Abuja, Nigeria
.
By Jerry W.
Bird...
I
am Abuja, federal capital of Nigeria since
1991. I am located in the heart of
Africa's most populous country, and
confident about my future as a world
center and magnet for cultural, adventure,
educational and leisure tourism in the
magical lands of Nigeria beyond my
borders. My broad, well maintained paved
streets, attractively landscaped
boulevards and modern overpasses keep the
traffic flowing at a smooth pace, morning,
noon and night - and with wide
cinemascopic vistas in every direction,
there's no feeling of being hemmed in by
gridlock. Continued
