Innovative concepts for the hotel sector at the ITB Convention Market Trends & Innovations on 9 March 2006 &endash; all-day event for the first time

Throughout the world the hospitality sector is facing new challenges. The ITB Berlin has responded to this trend by organising the first all-day Hospitality Day at the ITB Convention Market Trends & Innovations. On 9 March the Hospitality Day will focus on innovative strategies, marketing, concepts and technology. This event will be held from 10.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. and admission is free. It will be chaired by Maria Pütz-Willems, Editor-in-Chief of hospitalityINSIDE.com .

From low cost to new luxury

"Pricing in the Hospitality Industry" will be the first topic to be dealt with at the ITB Hospitality Day. Between 10.30 and 11.30 a.m. participants will discuss where hotels could achieve considerable savings with their pricing structures. This event, which will offer numerous suggestions on the subject of pricing, will be introduced by Prof. Dr. Hermann Simon, Chairman and founder of Simon, Kucher & Partners, Strategy and Marketing Consultants, who will also chair this session. The participants in these discussions will be: Jürgen Fischer, President Commercial Operations Hilton, Markus Lewe, , Regional Vice President Revenue Strategy Marriott International - Continental Europe, Kristie Willmott, Jumeirah International and André Witschi, Chairman of the Board of Accor Hotels Germany.

From 11.45 a.m. to 1.15 p.m. attention will turn to the subject of energy costs, which contribute substantially to the overall costs and have a significant impact on economic efficiency in the hotel industry, especially when oil prices are so high. Moreover the use of renewable energy in the hotel sector is more in accordance with the principles of sustainable tourism than the consumption of fossil fuels. The importance of energy efficiency, the various technological possibilities, the implications for economic efficiency in the hotel industry, financing aspects and examples of best practice will be examined under the heading of "Energy Panel: Energy Efficiency and Solar Energy in the Hotel Sector". This event will be chaired by Volker Angres, ZDF Environmental Editor, and the participants will be Dr. Ahmet Lokurlu, General Manager of Solitem, Michael Müller, Parliamentary Under-Secretary at the Federal Environmental Ministry, Joachim Andreas Stelzer, Head of Sub-Division Systems & Solutions at Siemens Building Technologies, Gerhard Stryi-Hipp, General Manager of the National Solar Energy Association, and Arno Tomowski, Departmental Director, Energy/Environment/Infrastructure at the GTZ.

From 1.30 to 2 p.m. "New Luxury and New Customers" will look at the question of which concept will prevail: chains versus private hotels or mega-chains versus mini-chains. To throw more light on these aspects Maria Pütz-Willems will interview Simon Cooper, President & Chief Operation Officer, The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, Sir Rocco Forte, Chairman of the Board of Rocco Forte Hotels, and Claus Sendlinger, CEO & President design hotels.

"Low Cost-Hotels" will be the focus of the discussions about the current boom in this category. When can the hype be expected and to what extent is this a threat to traditional hotels are the questions that the chairman, Russel Kett, General Manager of the consultancy HVS, London, will be posing to his guests Stelios Haji-Ioannou, London, founder of the easyGroup and easyHotels, Michael Mücke, General Manager Accor Economy Hotels Germany, and Philippe Weyland, General Manager Motel One Germany, between 2.30 and 3.30 p.m.

"Why is Berlin different to London?" The central problems of the right location will be discussed by Peter Anscomb, Corporate Banking Royal Bank of Scotland, London, Wilma Kellermann-Baans, Vice President Business Development for Central Europe for Rezidor SAS Hospitality, Martin Wächter, Chief Marketing Officer Shangri-La Hotels & Resorts, and Reto Wittwer, President & CEO Kempinski Hotels, under the chairmanship of Maria Pütz-Willems from 4 to 5 p.m.
