The Quality BID Award recognizes the commitment to quality of awarded companies from all over the world whose business activities cover the top areas of industrial production and services. Peter Mwenguo, Managing Director, TTB, in accepting the Award in Madrid, stated "TTB has strived to improve the quality of the Tanzania Tourist experience by reviewing all sectors of the industry. In the field of environmental protection, the Hon. Zakia Hamdani Meghji, MP, Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, has introduced special initiatives through the Tanzania National Parks to develop new strategies on environmental issues through launching new educational and training programs for park rangers and staff, tour operators and guides, local populations and school children, as well as the tourists themselves.

Mwenguo also noted that another major step in quality control taken by the Tanzanian government is the construction of a tarmac road on the 77 kilometer stretch of gravel road that leads to three key wildlife parks of Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park. The new asphalt road, funded with the help of a grant from the Japanese Government, is the lifeline for tourism in the Northern circuit and will go a long way to increasing tourist comfort and reducing vehicle operating costs. "This road, which will be completed in three to four years, will be a boost to marketing destination Tanzania," said Mwenguo.

According to Jose E. Prieto, President and CEO of Business Initiative Directions, "TTB, aware of the importance of tourism for the preservation of the environment in the economy of Tanzania in order to protect natural habitats that are an irreplaceable global heritage, fulfils the need for quality control and management of such a significant sector."

Tanzania, which has been singled out of the ATA members for its dynamic inspiration towards rekindling the ATA membership, was also praised for having proposed the continent's theme: "Africa-Tourism Destination for the Next Millennium." The theme which features at the last year's Arusha ATA Congress has now been adopted by all members as a way of publicizing Africa in the tourist source markets.

During the Congress sessions, Mrs. Meghji held several talks with American delegates in efforts to promote Tanzania in North America. Among other promotional activities agreed for immediate implementation includes advertising educational tours and a promotional trip to the USA and Canada. Tanzania delegation visited the Cape Coast region of Ghana in order to see the 'Kakum National Park and Cape Coast which had been the first capital of the Gold Coast now Ghana. In Cape Coast, Tanzania delegation visited and was shown the historical and cultural attractions including the oldest castle built in 1794 by the British in the place where slaves used to be shipped to America.

The tour which has been organized by the president of ATA' s Ghana Chapter came as an appreciation to Tanzania for having conducted an exciting host national program last year during the ATA congress in Arusha where delegates visited various tourist sites in Arusha.
