Tanzania's tourism
industry is booming . In fact it is the
fastest growing tourist destination in
Africa. This is reflected not just in
tourism numbers, but in the numerous
recent investments by major luxury hotels
such as the Kempinski Hotels and
Resorts,Movenpick and Sun
International.Kempinski has opened its
first properties in East Africa, the
Kilimanjaro Kempinski on the Dar es Salaam
waterfront and the Zamani Kempinski Resort
Hotel on the Island of Zanzibar. "Tanzania
is without a doubt one of the most
exciting tourism destinations in the
world", said Marcus van der Wal, Regional
Director for the Kempinski Hotels and
Resorts. Movenpick
has taken over the Royal Palm Hotel in Dar
es Salaam, its first property in East
Africa, Sun International is building a

HON.
ANTHONY DIALLO APPOINTED NEW
MINISTER OF NATURAL RESOURCES AND
TOURISM, UNITED REPUBLIC OF
TANZANIA.
New Deputy
Minister and Permanent Secretary
Appointed
(DAR ES
SALAAM, TANZANIA) January 20,
2006. The United Republic of
Tanzania announced the
appointment of Hon. Anthony
Diallo, MP, as the new Minister
of Natural Resources and
Tourism.
Hon. Anthony
Diallo, MP, a businessman and
media executive from Lake
Victoria's city of Mwanza,
assumed the role from his
predecessor, Hon. Zakia Hamdani
Meghji. Hon. Diallo is the
former Tanzanian Deputy Minister
for Water and Livestock
Development.
The Ministry
of Natural Resources and Tourism
will also have for the first time
a Deputy Minister, Hon. Zabein
Mhita. The new Permanent
Secretary will be Mr. Saleh
Pamba, who has held the
position of Director of Tourism
under the former
Minister. One of the
fastest growing tourist
destinations in Africa,
Tanzania's tourism is
booming. This
increase is reflected both in
tourist numbers, as well as in
recent investments by major
international luxury hotel chains
including Kempinski and
Movenpick. Tanzania expects
the total number of tourist
arrivals to increase 15%, from
600,000 in 2005 to an estimated
700,000 in 2006. This
growth is attributed to
Tanzania's world famous
attractions including Mt.
Kilimanjaro, Ngorongoro Crater,
Serengeti National Park, and
Zanzibar, just to name a few; and
the fact that Tanzania is a
democratic, peaceful, and
st able
country.
Challenges
facing the new Minister include
building sustainable tourism
initiatives, and achieving the
Millennium Development Goals
(MDG).
Tanzania's fastest growing sector
is tourism, creating over 25,000
new jobs each year. For more

There should be plenty
of tourists and business travelers to fill
these new properties. Tanzania expects the
total number of tourist arrivals to
increase from 582,807 in 2004 to 600,000
this year, said Peter Mwenguo, Managing
Director of the Tanzania Tourist Board
(TTB). Stakeholders in the industry
attribute this growth to the world famous
tourist attractions including Mt.
Kilimanjaro, Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti,
Selous and Zanzibar; high quality tourist
accommodations; and the fact that Tanzania
is a democratic, peaceful and stable
country.Thuis December, Tanzanians
successfully went through elections to
elect H. E. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, the New
President of the United Republic of
Tanzania.
President Kikwete
succeeds H. E. Benjamin William Mkapa who
has completed his two presidential terms
from 1995-2005. On December 29, 2005 the
new elected members of Parliament elected
Hon. Samwel Sitta (MP) to become new
Speaker of the Union Parliament for a term
of five years. Tanzania has successfully
undergone democratic change with good
governance to ensure fast economic growth
and development for the
people.

Kilimanjaro
Marathon More Popular Than Ever
Situated
south of the equator in Tanzania at 19,340
feet, Kilimanjaro is Africa's highest
mountain and the highest "free standing"
mountain in the world. Huge permanent
glaciers flow down from the summit, and
the sheer presence of this huge mountain
dominates the entire area. An icon in
Africa, "Kili " as she is affectionately
known, is one of the sights every African
should see at least once in his or her
life. Details->..

Women
in Tourism in
Tanzania
It
should come as no surprise to anybody who
has been in the dynamic presence of the
Honorable Mme. Zakia Hamdani Meghji, MP,
Tanzania's Minister for Natural Resources
and Tourism since 1987, that the door is
wide open with opportunities for women to
excel as professionals in the country's
rapidly growing travel industry, starting
right from the top. The private sector,
recently paid tribute to Hon. Meghji for
her strong leadership and contribution to
the tremendous increase in tourism since
she became Minister, and honored her by
affectionately naming her "Mama Utalii"
(Mother Tourism)." This is just one of the
features that appeared in our May 2003
Congress edition of Africa Travel
Magazine. Details
Fashions
from
Zanzibar
We had the good fortune to meet
Farouque Abdela and his creative
associates at the Zanzibar Beach Resort.
Here's a brief item from the
Abdela
Design
website Born in Zanzibar, Farouque
continued the family tradition as fourth
generation tailor, going on to train at
the London College of Fashion. Working
with natural fibers and traditional
African textiles, Farouque creates couture
and avant garde fashions. His exquisite
fashion sensibility has been seen in films
and theaters as well as on international
catwalks. Masai and Egyptian traditions
strongly influence Farouque's work.
Encouraged by the late Princess Diana to
maintain the African influence in his
work, Farouque hopes to help African
fashion gain recognition as a vital
influence in global style. To this end,
Farouque has held individual fashion shows
in varied locales including: the 1999
Zanzibar International Film Festival and
the Save the Children Benefit in London.
Dar
es Salaam Wins Heart of North American
Author
according
to author Henry Pelham Burn, his travel
agent was quite concerned that, during a
scheduled trip to Tanzania, he would be
"stuck" in Dar es Salaam for two whole
days. After some deliberation, Burn
resigned himself to visiting Dar, a city
depicted by some as a place to go through
rather than enjoy as a destination in it
self. This misconception is prevalent
among the uninformed, or those who haven't
taken the time to explore this historic
capital and seaport city with its ideal
climate, classic buildings, modern airport
and ferry service to Zanzibar and other
exotic islands. Commenting in Africa
Travel Magazine, Pelham said, "A couple of
days in Dar proved not long enough." Among
Mr. Burn's recommended attractions are
KARIOKOO MARKET, THE NATIONAL MUSEUM,
NYERERE CULTURAL CENTER, MWENGE VILLAGE,
VILLAGE MUSEUM, COCO BEACH, KIGAMBONI. A
newly minted Dar enthusiast, the American
author provides many reasons why the sites
mentioned are sure please most visitors to
Dar es Salaam.

TANAPA-
Tanzania's National Parks
Tanzania
has more land devoted to national parks
and game reserves than any other wildlife
destination in the world. Everything from
pristine coral reefs to the Crater
Highlands, remote game reserves and the
famous national parks are protected by
government law and placed in trust for
future generations to marvel at in wonder
and awe. In addition to a listing of the
main attractions of Tanzania, we have
included many parks that are largely
neglected in favor of the big names like
Serengeti and Ngorongoro. It is our hope
that in writing up these lesser-known
locations, visitors may be tempted to
include them on their itineraries and
encourage tourism to other equally
beautiful, parts of the
country.
Most
hunting reserves have been omitted due to
restricted access for safari vehicles and
wildlife tourists. Tanzania has incredible
biodiversity, so wildlife populations and
bird species often vary according to the
season and region. A visit to one of the
smaller game reserves for a short hiking
trip or a day excursion is well worth the
effort of an extended itinerary. Off the
beaten track, the sights and sounds of
Africa truly come alive.
