ENVIRONMENTAL
PROTECTION ON LAND AND SEA Perspectives
for a Cleaner Environment Vancouver,
BC, Canada. We were pleased to be representing
Africa's tourism industry at one of the new
century's most important international conferences,
a hands-on ecological summit that involves over
1.800 delegates from 50 countries, including a
strong African contingent. A significant fact is
that in 36 years, was is the first IOSC Conference
that has been held outside of the USA. I feel
especially privileged, since for over a decade I
was involved in writing, directing and producing a
series of audio visual training programs on oil
spill prevention, recovery and cleanup. I learned a
great deal from the experts, working on behalf of
various industry associations and branches of
government, who were my valued clients. Protection
of Africa's vast coastline, lakes and river systems
has a key factor on tourism, as has the
preservation of forests, marshes and
wildlife. With
that in mind we viewed the "Wildlife Theater" ... a
dramatic presentation on the cleaning, handling and
restoration of sea birds following various oil
spills from South Africa's Cape Town area to the
recent tanker disaster off the coast of Spain and
Portugal. The program owes much of its success to
IFAW, International Fund for Animal Welfare
(www.ifaw.org).
We will provide reports from this and other
activities during and following the event. I look
forward to the opportunity of meeting and
interviewing many leaders in this vital sector of
the industry Keep

of the IOSC The
International Oil Spill Conference (IOSC) was held
at the Vancouver Convention and Exhibition Centre,
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. More than
1,800 people from 50 countries are expectedto
attend the technical sessions and view more than
280 exhibits. The conference theme for 2003 is
Prevention, Preparedness: Response and
Restoration, Perspectives for a Cleaner
Environment. The theme includes a view toward
the future with special emphasis on appropriate
strategies for improvement. This
IOSC was the 18th biennial gathering since the
first event in December 1969. IOSC is the
preeminent gathering of
oil spill response experts from around the world
and is a unique opportunity to catch up on all
major developments
in the field and interact with the most
knowledgeable people tied to those
activities. The
conference is jointly sponsored by the
following: American
Petroleum Institute (API) United
States Coast Guard (USCG) United
States Environmental Protection Agency
(USEPA) International
Maritime Organization (IMO) International

sponsoring organizations are aware of security
concerns and are taking every precaution to ensure
a safe conference for all participants. During this
time of conflict, now more than ever, it is
important that the international oil spill
prevention, preparedness, response, and restoration
community come together to share best practices,
experiences, and lessons learned. As we all know,
this conflict has the potential to threaten the
environment of Iraq and surrounding countries with
the release of large volumes of crude oil from a
variety of sources. Experts attending the IOSC may
all be called upon to assist with the crisis in
various ways. Indeed, the conference is an
excellent way to sharpen the knowledge and skills
that may be urgently needed for use in fighting the
environmental damage of oil spills caused by the
conflict. The
