ZANZIBAR NAMED BEST ISLAND DESTINATION IN AFRICA AND THE MIDDLE EAST BY TRAVEL + LEISURE MAGAZINE READERS
In accepting the Award on behalf of Zanzibar, H.E. Daraja noted that "Zanzibar lures the American traveler, not just because the name itself conjures up a mystical and romantic image, but also because it is known as a peaceful, stable and hospitable Island, just like mainland Tanzania. We are especially proud that Zanzibar was honored this year, as we understand that the 2004 World's Best Awards had the largest reader response to date." Hon. Mohammed Aboud Mohammed said that "It is a great honor for us that Zanzibar, the magnificent, unspoiled archipelago of islands in the Indian Ocean, off mainland Tanzania, was chosen as the #1 destination in the Best Island category for Africa and the Middle East by the readers of such a prestigious publication as Travel + Leisure Magazine. We are most pleased, that the 'secret' about Zanzibar is out. We have made great efforts in the past couple of years to increase our profile in the American market, focusing on Stone Town, a World Heritage Site; the unique cultural festivals, featuring music, dance and film; and the world class marine parks and diving sites."
Zanzibar, which is a part of The United Republic of Tanzania, consists of Unguja, Pemba and some 50 smaller surrounding island and islets. Stone Town, the historic port city of Zanzibar Island, is a World Heritage Site and a major cultural attraction. Already popular for its beaches, water sports, scuba diving (using environmentally-friendly equipment), underwater photography, reef watching, dolphin watching and snorkeling, Zanzibar is now focusing on promoting its many year-round- festivals showcasing the diverse cultures and history of Tanzania's Kiswahili coastal islands.
"What makes Zanzibar's festivals unique and popular with visitors is that they are for the local population as well as for the tourists," says Vuai Mohammed, "There are events and activities that take place in the local communities throughout the islands." For more information
