Africa's
Amazing Serengeti Superstars
Wildlife
Conservation item by Jerry W.
Bird.ociation
Like
a cinemascope movie, Africa's Animal Empire filled
the scene, then fanned out in all directions on the
far horizon; to the Tanzania - Kenya border, or to
Lake Victoria and beyond. And what performers these
four legged actors were; prancing about like tv
wrestlers, snorting and butting heads, as if they
knew they were the star performers of our show.
On
a rocky knoll nearby, a pride of lions lolled
lazily, like cruise passengers on deck chairs,
surveying the situation, as they stood by for the
evening dinner gong. Staring at us curiously, this
shaggy crew was perfectly cast for the scene to
follow, as were the two cheetahs lying couched in
the tall grass near the Serengeti airport. In a few
hours, traversing the countryside by Land Rover,
courtesy of Serena's Serengeti Lodge, we were able
to spot at least a dozen recognizable species,
including several from the Big Five category. As a
matter of fact, as seen from the air, every water
hole from Arusha, to the Ngorongo Crater and Rift
Valley, was surrounded by animals of every size and
stripe. Before she could land Regional Air's Twin
Otter, pilot Iris McCallum had to buzz the airstrip
several times to scare away the critters. The next
morning, following a 5 am breakfast in the bush,
Muguette Goufrani and our North American travel
media group drifted a few feet above the migrating
herd in a hot air balloon. She will tell you all
about it in our coming edition.

web site of HAT Hotel & Adventure Tours has
some great Safari pictures which they want to share
with you. these were taken during various tours and
safaris in various parts of Kenya.
Animals
of Cameroon,
West Africa:
From an attractive Media Kit package we received
from Cameroon Tourism while at the ATA 25th Jubilee
Congress in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Until then, we
had no idea what a wide variety of animals and
birds there are in this beautiful West African
country.
On
Safari: Harold's Defining Moment
"Thirty
years ago," Harold Gordon of New York's Park Tours
related, "I was on a minibus heading for Arusha
Tanzania, when I spotted four tall, ungainly, but
graceful giraffes galloping towards an acacia tree
to munch on the green leaves. The bus stopped and
we watched as they fed, wrapping their tongues
around the thorns to reach the tiny leaves. These
proud, funny faced, long-necked giraffes, each over
16 ft. tall, were almost within touching distance.
I could see their the long eyelashes, as one turned
to look at me.
They
were alive, we were both alive! The giraffe and I
shared this earth together, and this eye contact
was a defining moment, especially for a city boy
like myself, who grew up in a world of concrete and
steel. When I saw these four giraffes dancing on
the African horizon, my life and career changed
forever." Click

Our theme
for the 4th EcoTourism Symposium in Abuja, Nigeria
this December is "Preservation- Land-
Culture-Wildlife." How timely that is when we see
what is can happen right in our own backyards if we
don't become guardians of these treasures. Coming
from Western Canada and spending many days and
nights in the Yukon wilderness, I've seen my share
of wild animals up close. But until we flew into
Kilimanjaro International Airport, and took a side
trip from Arusha, Tanzania to the Serengeti Plain,
did I realize what life must have been like on the
Canadian Prairies 150 years ago. All the more
reason for sound conservation practices today and
in the future. The herds of caribou we used to spot
swimming the Yukon river, were a puny troop
compared to the seemingly endless stretch of
wildebeeste and zebra we saw on our first
safari.

New
Products and Destinations featured
in Tanzania Tourist Board Annual Awards
The
Tanzania Tourism Board (TTB) launched a competition for the
first Annual Tanzania Tourism 2000 awards at ATA 25th Annual
Congress. Peter Mwenguo (1st from left, with Mr. Pamba and
Hon. Zaki H. Meghji, Tourism Minister) ) , TTB Managing
Director announced that the first Awards would be presented
at the 2001 ATA Congress and feature Tanzania's newest
tourism products. Tanzania is
promoting some of its best kept secrets: Ujiji (above), a
fishing village near Kogoma in the Western part of the
country.
New tourism
products:
Selous
: The largest African reserve, Selous is crossed by the
Rufiji River. Its tributaries form a network of lakes ideal
for boat safaris and bird watching. A perfect venue for both
walking and four-wheel drive safaris.
Ruaha National
Park: Situated in the center
of the country, Ruaha is the second largest National Park
and is bordered by the Ruaha River. From July to December
the wildlife, including herds of elephants, giraffes, prides
of lions and Great Kudus, can all be seen without moving
from the banks of the river.
Mikumi National
Park: Only one-hour charter
flight, or four-hour drive, from Dar es Salaam, Mikumi
provides the visitor with an opportunity to view all of the
wildlife species and certain rare ones, such as the wild
dog. The Udzungwa Mountains National Park offers spectacular
mountain views and waterfalls. Shopping at the many
handicraft markets along the road to Mikumi from Dar es
Salaam is one of the bonuses of driving instead of
flying.
Kigoma:
With a new air strip, it is not likely that Kigoma will
remain one of Tanzania's best-kept secrets for very long.
Located in Western Tanzania on the shores of Lake
Tanganyika, Kigoma is a thriving port and its sister town,
Ujiji, a traditional fishing village. A memorial to the
legendary Dr. Livinstone is also located here. Kigoma serves
as an excellent base for visits to Mahale Mountain National
Park and Gombe National Park.
Mafia
Island: Situated on the
Indian Ocean, only as 30-minute charter flight from Dar es
Salaam. Mafia Island is a divers' paradise. An exciting new
marine park was inaugurated recently on the Island,
featuring a large variety of coral and fish.
A tourism delegation led by Hon. Zakia
Hamdani Meghji, Tanzania's Minister for Natural Resources
and Tourism, held seminars in Los Angeles, Washington DC,
New York and Atlanta in conjunction with local ATA Chapters.
"Following the successful four city, tour, tourism increased
dramatically," said Mwenguo. "By mid-may this year, Tanzania
surpassed the year 2000 target of 50,000 arrivals from North
America." TTB established the Tanzania Tourism 2000 awards
both to express its support and appreciation to the travel
professionals and media who have worked hard promoting and
selling Tanzania. and as an incentive to increase the
numbers even more in the coming year. Awards to feature new
tourism products.
1st
Award: Will go to the media,
either a publication, radio, TV or individual travel
journalist with the most coverage on destination
Tanzania.
2nd
Award: Will go to a tour operator
or group organizer sending the largest number of tourists to
Tanzania
3rd
Award: Will go to the outstanding
airline bringing the largest number of tourists to
Tanzania
4th
Award: Will go to a tour operator
or group organizer who will send most of its clients to the
featured areas of Tanzania's newly developed tourism
products. This year the focus will be on the coast and
southern circuit, which includes Selous Games Reserve, Ruaha
National Park, Mikumi National Park, Kigoma and Mafia
Island. For more information on Tanzania, visit the TTB web
site at; www.tanzania-web.comzibar
