education Johannesburg
(TVLW) - IFC, a member of the
World Bank Group, has joined
forces with the University of
Pretoria, and five other African
business schools to support the
development of high-quality
education for managing tourism in
the region. Through the Tourism
Training Network, the initiative
draws on the expertise of leading
faculty from the George
Washington University in the
United States, the University of
Pretoria in South Africa, and
other world-class tourism
programs. It will help increase
the capacity of African business
schools in designing and
delivering executive education
programs that target private
sector and public sector
managers. Sam
Nganga, IFC Operations Officer,
said, "Strengthening tourism
education in Africa will increase
the pool of competent managers
that can catalyze the development
of the sector, boost economic
growth, and create
jobs." Don
Hawkins, Professor of Tourism
Policy at the George Washington
University, said, "Delivering
quality management education in
tourism is vital to unlocking its
potential as a strategic growth
sector in Africa. Through the new
network, we can facilitate a
shared vision and harness the
collective knowledge and
expertise of Africa's top
institutions." As part
of the first phase of the
program, faculty from five
African business schools in
Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique,
Rwanda, and Senegal recently
completed an intensive course
development session at the
University of Pretoria, under the
guidance of Professor Hawkins and
Professor Ernie Heath (University
of Pretoria). The participating
schools committed to launch
executive education programs in
tourism by July 2008. They
include the School of Finance and
Banking (Rwanda), Strathmore
University (Kenya), Institut
Superieur de Management
(Senegal), Instituto Superior
Politecnico e Universitario
(Mozambique), and Institut
National des Sciences Comptables
et de l'Adminstration
d'Entreprises

HELPS NIGERIA LAUNCH NATIONAL
TOURISM MASTER PLAN
Nigerian
Minister of Tourism, Culture and
National Orientation, Prince
Adetokunbo Kayode (San), invited
ATA delegates to participate in
the launch of the country's
Tourism Master Plan on October 19
in Abuja, the capital city. The
plan aims to position Nigeria as
the continent's leading cultural,
historical and business tourist
destination. Minister Kayode said
the plan "was borne out of the
Government's firm conviction on
the opportunities offered by the
sector for sustainable
development, especially at the
grassroots level, its high
potential for enhanced foreign
exchange earnings and the
environment friendly nature of
tourism programmes". He
emphasized that tourism provides
a variety of new opportunities
for improving socio-economic
conditions, diversifying the
economy, and achieving stability.

32nd Annual Congress in Ethiopia
Underscores Theme of Branding
Africa as a Tourist
Destination
Leading
tourism industry experts from
more than 20 countries in Africa,
North America, Europe, and Asia
came together in Addis Ababa,
Ethiopia from May 6-11 to
participate in ATA's 32nd Annual
Congress. Ethiopia's Culture and
Tourism Ministry hosted the event
in time for the country's
millennium celebrations.
Ethiopian Airlines served as the
official congress carrier.
Ethiopian
President Girma Wolde-Giorgis
welcomed delegates at the opening
ceremony held at the United
Nations Economic Commission for
Africa (UNECA) headquarters in
Addis Ababa. "The tourism
industry involves the
participation of billions of
people of all walks of life," he
said. "Yet irrespective of
Africa's diversified wealth, the
continent's world share of
receipts from international
tourism is below four percent."
ATA Executive Director Eddie
Bergman said Africa's 53 nations
need to "brand Africa in a way
that benefits the continent as a
whole and each individual
country. This will enable the
diverse community of nations to
present its tourism product with
a strong voice, and to put its
collective weight behind
continental and national
priorities." The five-day program
included topics such as branding
Africa, emerging growth markets,
alongside roundtable discussions,
an arts and crafts fair, and an
expo. Tanzania, Ghana, Nigeria,
Ethiopia and Zambia showcased
their countries at sponsored
meals at the Hilton-Addis and
Ghion hotels, and Ethiopian
Airlines sponsored a special
event. Working with the
non-profits, MedShare
International and Miracle Corners
of the World, and the private
sector, ATA facilitated the
contribution of approximately
$350,000 worth of medical
supplies to a hospital in
Lalibela. ATA-Tennessee member
Patricia Tharpe also facilitated
a $50,000 donation of medical
equipment and supplies to Addis
Ababa's Black Lion
Hospital

SoCal Chapter Scores Another
Success at NBC Travel Expo .
Africa
Travel Association Southern
California Chapter hosted the
Africa section of the NBC-TV
Travel
Expo at the Los Angeles
Convention Center, June 16-17,
2007. The event welcomed
over 20,000 visitors during its
two day run. Of the total
visitors approximately 4% were
travel agents who were supplied
with technical and sales
promotion material for their
offices, versus the consumers who
were invited to select Africa
destination literature supplied
by the ATA member tourist boards
and tour operators.
Sunday of the Expo was Father's
Day and to celebrate each Dad who
visited the SoCalATA
booth was given a pen
supplied by the Kenya Tourism
Board. ATA participation at
the various consumer travel shows
is utilized to promote the idea
of leisure travel to Africa and
answer specific destination
question of the public.
However, the important
component of ATA's participation
is the opportunity to
gather consumer research
data in regard to Africa leisure
travel attitude, desires and the
market's perception of visiting
Africa and its individual
