THE HONORABLE MOHAMMED ABOUD MOHAMMED, MINISTER OF TRADE, INDUSTRY, MARKETING & TOURISM. ZANZIBAR, TANZANIA WELCOMES ATA DELEGATES TO ZANZIBAR, TANZANIA

THE ARUSHA MANIFESTO

The first President of Tanzania, Mwalimu Julius K. Nyerere recognized the importance of Africa's wildlife, not only to the future of all Africans, but also to the rest of the world. In September 1961 at a symposium on the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources, he gave a speech that has become known as the Arusha Manifesto:

"The survival of our wildlife is a matter of grave concern to all of us in Africa. These wild creatures amid the wild places they inhabit are not only important as a source of wonder and inspiration but are an integral part of our natural resources and our future livelihood and well being. "In accepting the trusteeship of our wildlife we solemnly declare that we will do everything in our power to make sure that our children's grandchildren will be able to enjoy this rich and precious inheritance. "The conservation of wildlife and wild places calls for specialist knowledge, trained manpower, and money, and we look to other nations to co-operate with us in this important task, the success or failure of which not only affects the continent of Africa but the rest of the world as well."

The College of African Wildlife Management
Following the Arusha Manifesto in 1961, the College of African Wildlife Management was established in 1963 as a pioneer institution for the training of African wildlife managers. Since this time, the College has been a leader in providing quality wildlife management training in Africa, and has trained over 2000 wildlife managers from 23 African countries and 17 non-African countries.

The College Curriculum: Since its establishment, the College has developed a range of different courses, each targeted for a particular level, and each geared towards producing professional, knowledgeable and skilled wildlife managers. The College aims to provide needs-based, responsive and adaptive training to meet the ever-changing demands of clients.

Curriculum review is undertaken on a continual basis to incorporate emerging issues and practices in wildlife management. A regional external curriculum review panel advises the College on the content of the curriculum, and monitors training quality.

Zanzibar's Extraordinary Sites of the Port's Slave Trade along the African Diaspora Heritage Trail

Owing to the growth of slave trade in 18th and early 19th century, Zanzibar became an essential location along the Eastern African slave-trading routes. Slaves were taken from as far as Congo, traveled to Bagamoyo, then shipped to Unguja to either work in the cloves and coconut plantation in Unguja and Pemba or to be shipped to the Middle East and former French colonies of Reunion, Mauritius, Seychelles and Madagascar, or North America. Tanzania's Major Site along the African Diaspora Heritage Trail

Bagamoyo, Proposed Unesco World Heritage Site and Part of Tanzania's African Diaspora Heritage Trail. Bagamoyo, 45 miles north of Dar es Salaam, is an important cultural heritage site for Tanzania. One of the most revered historic centers of the infamous slave trade,Bagamoyo was also the first capital of Tanzania under German Colonial rule until it shifted in 1892 to Dar es Salaam.

AFRICA TRAVEL ASSOCIATION
ATA &emdash; The International Travel Industry Association for Africa

The Africa Travel Association (ATA) is an international, nonprofit, nonpolitical, and educational organization established in 1975 to promote tourism to the continent of Africa. Its membership is comprised of African government tourist offices, international airlines, hotels and resorts, cruise lines, tour operators, travel agents, group organizers, tourism educators and public relations/marketing firms. ATA is an industry partner in "Green Globe"; a member of the World Tourism Organization (WTO) and American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA).; and a founding member of the Coalition of Partners of the International Institute for Peace Through Tourism (IIPT).

The primary objective of the organization is to promote the tourist attractions of the continent of Africa and educate all interested travel agents, meeting and conference planners, group tour organizers, and incentive companies about the products and services offered by the tourism industry in Africa.

In 1990, in Casablanca, ATA issued its first Manifesto on Ecotourism, which was followed-up with ATA initiating Africa's first Ecotourism Symposium in Senegal in 1992.
