NEWPORT NEWS, Virginia: The Flying Hospital, a Lockheed L-1011 containing the world's largest fully equipped surgical hospital ever constructed inside an aircraft will be managed by a tax-exempt charitable organization located in Newport News,Virginia. "Our goal for The Flying Hospital remains clear and unequivocal.  We are citizens of the world and The Flying Hospital will be available to help the sick and needy of any nation," said Mr. Walter Frehe, the organization's new Chief Executive Officer. (see additional photos)

A 30+ year aviation veteran, Frehe has held senior management and consulting positions with numerous airlines and aviation companies including Western Airlines, Regent Airlines and Federal Express.  He explained that The Flying Hospital would be operated "as a 100 percent, non-denominational, non-religious, worldwide humanitarian effort." Our most current information on the Flying Hospital is from Frontline of India: http://www.frontlineonnet.com/fl1924/stories/20021206002108300.htm and ISTAT: http://www.istat.org/jettrader/sept_2001/page3.html

Letters: I'm glad to see the aircraft sill in service. I had not heard much about her since the last Delta L-1011 was sent to her for parts. Has anyone looked into getting the aircraft from Donald Trump? Its the only one of the four original aircraft that still is configured with the lower lounge. I would expect that would be a good donor aircraft. I had last seen the hospital ship when she was being modified in Tucson. I had first seen her when she was parked in the desert shortly after PSA had received the 4 aircraft. I later planned and supervised the 455 gross weight mod at Lockheed Aero Mod.

I did the estimates for her modification into the flying hospital. It was one of the most interesting and enjoyable programs of my career. I believe I met John on one of my trips out to Tucson. I know we had talked several times on the phone.

Are you maintaining the aircraft yourselves or contracting it out? I have lost track with most of our L-1011 people who were at Lockheed and at American Trans Air, where I first worked the L-1011. Again, its good to see she is doing the good work she was intended to do. Frank Showalter, Greenville, S. Carolina. JShowal638@aol.com, Apr 2004

LATEST NOTE: The Flying Doctors' Society of Africa (FDSA) was founded in 1970, primarily to finance the work of the Flying Doctor Service (FDS), one of AMREF's oldest programmes offering medical evacuation services to critically ill patients in remote areas. The Society funds other projects including surgical safaris and specialist outreach programmes in East Africa; the radio communication network, the 24-hour standby emergency personnel and free medical evacuation and transfer flights for the poor. Surgeons, Physicians, flight nurses, pilots, a fleet of aircraft, ground ambulances and a 24 hour Emergency Communication and Response Centre make up the famous Flying Doctor Service.
