Hon. Zakia Hamdani
Meghji reappointed
Minister for Natural
Resources and
Tourism
Plans to expand promotion
in North American Market

President Benjamin Mkapa of the Republic of Tanzania, himself just reelected for a second term, has announced the reappointment of the Honorable Zakia Meghji, as Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism. The Minister's Portfolio has been expanded to include Antiquities, which ties in with the Tanzania Tourism Board's (TTB) new emphasis on the development of cultural tourism and historical sites. TTB's promotional focus will now include such special interest markets as the arts, handicrafts, museums and archaeology. Hon. Meghji, who was reelected to parliament, has held the post since 1997. The Minister is currently Vice President of ATA- the Africa Travel Association, with chapters in Africa, the United States and Canada.

It was under Minister Meghji's leadership that the Tanzania Tourism Board successfully launched the Tanzanian Tourism 2000 campaign in the North American Market. "Following the four-city tour led by the Minister herself, tourism increased dramatically, 'said Peter Mwenguo, TTB Managing Director. "By mid-May this year, Tanzania surpassed the year 2000 target of 50,000 arrivals from North America."

TTB is now looking to expand its penetration of the US and Canadian markets in 2001 with another promotional tour scheduled for early spring. The first Tanzania Tourism 2000 travel industry awards will be presented at the 26th Annual Africa Travel Association Congress in South Africa, May 2001.
