Yityish Titi Aynaw, a 21-year-old from Netanya, was chosen Miss Israel
2013 on Wednesday night — the first Ethiopian-born contestant to win the
		title.
Aynaw, who came to Israel with her family when she was 12, was entered into the
competition by a friend, and had no previous modeling experience.
She said during the competition that she hoped to go into modeling “to change
attitudes to dark-skinned models. I’d love to become the first Israeli (TV)
host, the Tyra Banks of Israel.”
Interviewed on Thursday, Aynaw, who served as an officer during her military
service, said her integration into Israeli society had been greatly eased
because she had been “thrown into the deep end” in the state school system, “and
I learned to swim,” rather than placed in separate Ethiopians-only classes.
She also said she hoped “to represent all Israelis” as Miss Israel, rather than
specifically championing the cause of Ethiopian Israelis. She said it would be
an honor to represent Israel on the international stage, and that she thought it
would reflect well on Israel to have an Ethiopian-born beauty queen

Association 32nd World Congress in Addis
Ababa, May 2007, we had the good fortune
to renew our seven year friendship with
one of the most gracious, respected and
                           experienced travel tourism professionals
in all of Africa. Being accompanied by
such a shining example of true Ethiopian
hospitality was a special honor. We were
introduced to a variety of individuals,
several of whom have now become our
                           friends and business colleagues. Well
                           known throughout Ethiopia, Timkat Wedajo
has been a fountain of information for
                           Associate Editor Muguette Goufrani and
myself in compiling the stories and photos
for the special Millennium Edition of
Africa Travel Magazine. We are proud to
call him friend. Knowing people like
Timkat is another reason why myself and
other ATA Chapter Presidents are so
devoted to this worthy organization and
the host countries who are the foundation
                           of its membership.

to travel and tourism for most of his
                           career, serving in locations throughout
Ethiopia. Thanks to a growing friendship
with Timkat we got to know many members of
the Tour Operators Association in Addis
Ababa and discovered that they share a
common bond that is unknown in many other
countries. Never have I seen competitors
so willing to work together. We had an
opportunity to read the comments from some
of Timkat's customers and they confirmed
our strong feelings about his loyalty and
devotion to the cause. In the photos below
